SURVEY OF DRAFT
AMS use only AMS trained draft surveyors. These personnel follow the approved AMS Standard Operational Procedures for the determination of weight by draft survey. This will provide you with trusted draft weights at ports worldwide. Our experienced professionals feed the raw data into a spreadsheet, which then calculates the weight loaded or discharged. This result is reviewed before release to you and the raw data is retained should it be required.
For over a century draught surveys have been accepted as an accurate and convenient means of establishing the weight of bulk cargoes. They have been the basis for the preparation of bills of lading and assessing various charges and port fees. The basic principle upon which the draught survey methodology is based is over 2,200 years old tracing back to Archimedes’ Law of Buoyancy. The application of this law of physics to ships was further refined by formulas developed by European naval architects in the nineteenth century. While this principle is the basis for the work of draught surveyors throughout the world, the procedures by which they are applied vary considerably from country to country and even from port to port.
Draft Survey or Draught Survey is one of many surveys that includes in marine survey. The Draft Survey terms is the way to determine amount of cargo on board through reading the vessel draft marks, calculate to reach corresponding displacement of vessel that exist in vessel table and minus with liquid consumable such as; ballast, fresh water and fuel oil. To conduct Draft Survey asurveyor must have general basic known-ledge about vessel.
Draft surveys are used to determine the weight of cargo loaded onto, or discharged from, a vessel. Our global network of highly qualified draft surveyor's work to a defined draft survey protocol, resulting in accurate draft weights for you at load and discharge points. Dependable and consistent draft weights allow you to monitor and control shrinkage while limiting the financial risks associated with bulk cargo transactions.
In principle, draft surveys require only a measurement of the water displaced by the vessel before and after the cargo is transferred, along with a measurement of the water’s density. Water displacement is measured through draft marks on the ship and converted to a volume using draft tables. The weight of displaced water is calculated by multiplying its volume (displacement) by its density. The difference between the weights of water displaced before and after the cargo transfer will equal the weight of the fertilizer within measurement accuracy limits.
In practice, draft surveys are complicated procedures that require a highly qualified draft surveyor. Overall accuracy will depend on the surveyor’s skill in dealing with:
  • The varying density of sea or river water
  • Changes in quantity of ballast between initial and final draft readings
  • Changes in consumables on the vessel between initial and final draft readings (fuel oil, potable water, etc.)
  • Allowance for trim, list and deformation corrections (SGS uses data from the vessel’s draft tables)
  • Accuracy of the ship’s draft tables
  • Condition of the vessel’s draft markings
  • Weather and sea conditions at the time of reading (pitch and swell)
  • Weight of the cargo loaded when compared to the total capacity of the vessel
  • Weather and day-light
Simplify, there are several steps to conduct Draft Survey on board. A surveyor must follow the procedure that obligate to keep away from inconsiderable fault. The procedures are as below mentioned:
A.      PREPARING SURVEY FORMS, DOCUMENTS AND EQUIPMENTS.
Survey forms, documents and equipments are very important thing that have to prepare by surveyor primarily before conduct Draft Survey, because it will assist and support surveyor duties.
SURVEY FORMS :
  1. Draft Survey Report
  2. Ship’s Draft Survey and Certificate of Weight
  3. Tank Sounding for ballast, fresh water and fuel oil
  4. ASTM Table 54B for oil
SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS :
  1. Bill of lading or Manifest (for Discharging)
  2. Draft Survey Loading Port
  3. Hydrostatic Table / Displacement Table
  4. Cargo specification and data
EQUIPMENTS :
  1. Computer or Calculator, Pen and Notebook
  2. Density Meter or Hygrometer
  3. Sounding Tape, and Water & Oil Paste
  4. Flash Light.
The Equipment must be in good condition to prevent if there any fault in reading and calculation results.
B.      STEP BY STEP DRAFT SURVEY
The surveyor has to prepare the best step when he is arriving onboard, it will ensure to conduct Draft Survey correctly, to reach an accurate result. The step that may take by surveyor divided as below:
  1. Learning all data has collected that includes data’s of cargo and vessel quantity table.
  2. Confirming and permitting in the manner of job that will conduct to Master/Chief Officer.
  3. Reading the draft marks clearly and correctly. It is recommended to use small boat to reading draft
  4. Making sounding or gauging for ballast, fresh water, fuel oil diesel oil, lubricating oil and all liquids that are exist onboard. includes the density of liquid on tanks
  5. Knowing about Light of Ship and Constant onboard.
  6. Checking the density of sea or river water where the vessel docks.
  7. Making computation for reading draft, correcting with fore/mid/aft distance correction (if any), and then correcting with density of dock water and minus with all liquids onboard (deductible) accurately.
  8. After getting Net Displacement minus with Light Ship and Constant to gain Total Amount of Cargo Onboard.
  9. For any disputes, surveyor has to check the computation that he made previously.
  10. Collecting documents relate to survey.
